Complaints that a dishwasher has draining problems are fairly common. But you might ask yourself the question: why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher? While there are plenty of reasons why your dishwasher won’t drain completely, most of them are easy fixes.

Why is There Water in the Bottom of My Dishwasher?

Why is There Water in the Bottom of My Dishwasher?

In this article, we’ll discuss why there’s water at the bottom of your dishwasher. We point out some of the possible reasons and how to fix them.

Your dishwasher should be able to drain all the water at the end of the wash cycle. The only time your dishwasher can have any water at the bottom is when you open the door during a wash cycle. Here are some of the reasons there could be water in the bottom of your dishwasher and why you should maintain your kitchen appliances with some useful appliance tips.

A Clogged Pump Filter

Your pump filter may be clogged with pieces of broken plates or dishes, and pieces of broken glass. Whenever you’re cleaning out the filter, exercise caution as there may be sharp pieces of broken glass or plates. It’s not uncommon for a glass cup or other glass item to get broken when you’re loading or unloading the dishwasher. These broken pieces will fall into the dishwasher and end up in the pump filter. The filter is located at the very bottom of the dishwasher. Remove the dishwasher’s bottom rack and check the bottom of the dishwasher to see if the filter is clogged thus preventing the water from draining out.

Check the Drain Hose

Should the drain hose be clogged, bent or kinked, water won’t be able to be pumped out. Fixing this may require an anti-siphon loop in the drain hose to prevent dirty water from flowing backwards into the dishwasher.

The pump or the food chopping blade may be jammed due to a broken dish or large food item. You also need to confirm that the housing of the pump inlet is not clogged. If this is the case, you’ll be forced to take the dishwasher apart to access it. You can also reach out to a professional to get your dishwasher repaired, as they’ll know how to take it apart and put it back with ease.

A Clogged Garbage Disposal

A clogged garbage disposal will prevent water from the dishwasher from draining. Most times, the dishwasher drain hose is linked to the garbage disposal. Check to confirm that the water is flowing freely into the garbage disposal. When the dishwasher drains, you should be able to hear it running into the disposal.

The Water Float May Be Stuck

Check whether the float is working properly by removing the top cap then moving it up and down to be sure it’s moving freely. Get rid of any dirt or gunk that may be restricting its free movement. If the water float won’t drop down, it will stop the drain cycle before it’s finished.

Bottom Line

Now you should be able to answer the question: why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher? Another possible reason is a dishwasher that’s not level. You want the front of the water to have little adjustable feet so water doesn’t accumulate in the front. With the tips mentioned, you should be able to restore your dishwasher to proper working condition in no time.
