When it comes to swimming pools, there are virtually unlimited pool style options. By using some creativity and combining materials in unique combinations you can have an extraordinary look that is your own. One of the best starting points for selecting your pool style is to seek inspiration from the overall style of your home. Here are a few pool styles to bear in mind.

Pool Styles

This article highlights a few unique pool styles and ideas on a budget you should consider when building your pool. it covers everything from modern pools to natural and Mediterranean pools.

Modern Pools

Modern swimming pools are characterized by geometric shapes and clean lines. They often feature eye-catching displays of mosaic tile and vivid colors. A common feature of today’s modern pools is the incorporation of spas. Poured concrete is quite popular while coping is either very refined or non-existent.

Mediterranean Pools

Mediterranean pools are famed for their roman or Greek shapes and their aqua water color. Stone decking is often used in these types of pools accented with colorful ceramic tiles. Your typical Mediterranean pool will also commonly feature a waterfall for added aesthetic appeal.

Traditional Pools

These are the most common pool style. You’ll find them in a classic shape such as kidney or rectangular. A traditional swimming pool will also have a distinct coping, featuring paving stones or bricks outlining the perimeter of the pool. Many traditional pools also feature a slightly raised spa. Typically, the color of the water is that of a natural pond or lake.

Tropical Pools

Thoughts of the tropics immediately conjure up images of water and relaxation. Tropical style pools, therefore, can bring some of the vacation atmosphere to your pool area. A tropical-style pool will often feature palm trees, boulders, lush plants and waterfalls. To make your tropical pool really stand out, consider inlaying a mosaic of turtles, fish or another tropical motif on the bottom of the pool, or try adding planters right up against the coping.

Plunge Pools

Plunge pools are usually very small. They’re often designed for therapeutic use rather than swimming and are generally filled with cold water. Getting into a cold plunge pool after a hot shower or sauna is supposed to stimulate the flow of blood. They also work well for small properties with limited space, and all you need is a place to cool off during those hot summer months.

Natural Pool

Natural pools are also referred to as swimming ponds because they’re essentially ponds rather than traditional pools. They combine the swimming area with a water garden and are designed to self-clean. They rely on water plants to keep the water clean and don’t use salt or chlorinated water. They’re often difficult to maintain and are ideal for large properties where the pool is rarely used.

Bottom Line

Knowing the pool styles and type to build or buy is the first step in a series of critical decisions that every pool owner has to make. While there are many options from which to choose, material availability, surface, lot size, depth, local codes as well as budget are some of the crucial factors that affect your options when it comes to building a pool.
