Cleaning a Fountain Pen

If you are seeking tips on how to keep your fountain pen clean, this post has your back. It will tell you how to clean your pen as well as take good care of it. After you read this, you can sing all the way as you write.

Getting the Ink Out of Your Pen

This is the first step to a clean fountain pen. The approach you use will depend on the kind of pen you are using. If yours uses an ink converter, you can decide to clean it with or without the converter. You will have to unscrew the pen’s grip to get the ink converter out. If your pen uses cartridge ink, you have to get it out before you start cleaning.

Removing Ink Cartridge

You have to be careful with the cartridge because you can make a mess if it still has ink. Begin by holding the nib in a vertical position and slowly remove the cartridge. If there is any puncture on the cartridge, you should do everything with extra care.

Removing the Ink Converter

This one is an easy process. You can decide to leave the converter and flush the pen through it. However, you will not clean your pen thoroughly with the converter intact. If you choose to remove it, be gentle, and keep it straight to avoid any ink spilling.

Cleaning a Fountain Pen that Has Not Been Used for a Long Time

It may have been a long time since you used your pen. The ink will have dried up, and you have to soak the nib to soften it. Leave the nib soaked for adequate time. When you see the ink getting loose, it is time to clean it out.

Flushing the Nib

There are several techniques you can use to flush the ink out of the nib. It is all about your preference and the method that does a great job. One of the straightforward techniques is the use of bulb syringe. Go on and use the syringe to add warm water to the nib. Continue doing that until all the ink is flushed out.

Do not use detergents when you clean your pen. Use only plain warm water for cleaning because anything else can destroy your pen.

Drying Your Clean Pen

When all the ink is gone, your pen is clean. However, there is one more step before you can begin to use it. You have to dry it with a microfiber cloth. Give it time to dry completely. When you are sure it is dry, you can now assemble your writing tool. You are ready to use it for the first time after cleaning.

Bottom Line

Cleaning a fountain pen increases its lifespan. It will only take you a few minutes, and your fountain pen is as good as new.
