Pets create accidents sometimes — and that’s the reality of being a pet owner. Although it may seem like a tedious task of removing odors from these accidents, it actually is rather simple. You can either purchase a commercial grade pet cleaner or make your own carpet deodorizer for pet urine.

Using Commercial Cleaning Products

There are cleaning products that are made to specifically get rid of tough stains and pet odors from the carpet. These cleaners get rid of pet hairs and odor. For this to be effective, it is recommended to use the carpet cleaner together with a cleaning formula. The cleaning formulas have different scents and you can choose one according to your preferences.

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer for Pet Urine

Baking Soda

Baking soda works as a mild disinfectant. Using it will prevent build up since it also acts as a fungicide. What you’ll need to do is:

  • Pour the baking soda generously on the carpet.
  • Let it stay overnight. Staying overnight allows it to absorb all the moisture and odor.
  • Once it has stayed overnight, vacuum clean the carpet and another other moisture that is around the area.
  • If the smell does not go away, you can repeat the process until it does.

You can do this or make a carpet deodorizer using a mixture of cinnamon, baking soda and sodium borate.

Vinegar

Vinegar is not only used in cooking, it can be used in cleaning as well. What makes it a cleaning agent is its high percentage of acidity. White vinegar is usually the most preferred option when it comes to making a homemade cleaning solution. What you’ll need to do to make your own is:

  • Add a considerable amount of the white vinegar in a spray bottle. Add a bit of water as well, depending on the vinegar amount.
  • Spray the solution onto the carpet.
  • Allow the solution to sit in the carpet until it dries up.
  • Do this until the odor disappears.

After this process, vacuum clean the carpet for a clean and fresh feel.

Lemon

Just like vinegar, lemon is not only used in food, it is used as a cleansing agent as well. Lemon is acidic in nature and acts as a common disinfectant. You’ll need to:

  • Slice a piece of lemon or two and squeeze the juice in a bowl.
  • Depending on the gravity of the stain or odor, you can decide whether to mix it with water or not.
  • For a stain, rub the mixture on it and let it sit overnight.
  • For odor, spray the whole carpet continuously until the odor disappears.

After the process, vacuum clean for a more fresher scent.

Vodka

Vodka is not only a drink, but it can also be used in place of methylated spirit and as a cleaning agent too. For cleaning purposes, vodka is used to get rid of tough stains and smells by killing bacteria. Use odorless vodka for this purpose.

  • Rub the vodka on the spot or spray it entirely on the carpet.
  • Allow it to sit overnight until it dries up.
  • Clean with a vacuum cleaner for even better results.

In Conclusion

Accidents from your pets may happen from time to time, and that’s just the reality of being a pet owner. It isn’t hard or tedious to clean up these messes, especially if you have all of the products you need on hand. Rather than purchasing a commercial pet cleaner, you can make your own by using some simple ingredients. Making your own carpet deodorizer for pet urine can consist of baking soda, lemon, vinegar, or even vodka.
